Will AI replace UI/UX designers?

-- Today, I'm going to discuss something that's been on the mind's of many individuals lately, and that is AI. Will it replace UI/UX designer jobs in the future? That's the big question that I attempt to answer today.

Credit to the great designer whose fitness app UI I used in this video:

Video transcript:
"Will AI replace UI/UX designers?

Whew, at the moment -- no.. But in the future? Well, for the first time since the release of ChatGPT, I'm thinking it's a real possibility.

Now, to clarify, there will always be UI/UX jobs for designers, but I believe much of it will be automated.

I'm not going to pretend to be some machine learning AI expert, but just imagine issuing a prompt like this:
"Design a mobile app for my daily fitness tracker service, here are all of its features, and I want to maximize the conversion rate for free membership signups"

So, first off -- we now know with openai's ChatGPT, it can crank out awesome copy.

Imagine if this particular AI was trained with data that included CRO (conversion rate optimization) data, which would allow it to determine the best ad copy to use, the best IA (informational architecture), the best colors, the UI considerations -- all of this data, handed to you in a high fidelity mockup (or rather, a deployable web app) -- all ready to go and to be the best version of itself, within seconds..

Yeah, it's sort of worrisome. And before, I'd say that'd be way off in the distant future -- but now, I could easily see that becoming a reality in perhaps just a few years time..

So, what does this mean.. Should you not become a UI/UX designer? Nah, because this-- at the moment just speculation. And also, as I said at the beginning, it wouldn't negate all UI/UX jobs even when it arrives -- it simply means this:

You have to be the best you can be..

It's now more important than ever to be the swiss army knife of UI/UX. So -- get serious, use this time now when AI is not a threat, and make yourself irreplaceable.

What do you all think? I genuinely want to know your thoughts here in the comments -- so give to us -- will AI replace UI/UX designers?"

Let's get started!

What do you think? Are you about to start submitting your resume to McDonalds just yet?

I've been a web developer for 3 years. I've been thinking about specialising in frontend development to avoid the design patterns of backend which AI will most likely take down first (after the design aspect of making websites like this video explains and demonstrates.) I'm hoping the interactive parts of UX will still require a very human touch for years to come.

Around January I'll be sharing a demo of my "AI designer" tool that we're building right now ;) But yeah this is a hot topic right now - but the important part is that someone will have to still have the skills to EVALUATE what AI did. Otherwise it can start doing worse and worse projects and that'd be beside the point. We're safe, the skills will need to shift but that's ok :)

At the core of design is solving problems not making wireframes, sketches, obejcts and so on, those are just tools we use right now. Those tools will evolve and AI will most likely be part of them, guide us, inspire us, give as examples. We would just need learn those tools like we did before, so in the end it should give us more time, more space to what we should be doing which is thinking how to solve problems.

Not gonna lie, this whole AI stuff is pretty concerning to me especially since it is developing so rapidly.
Im Design student in Berlin with a focus on UI/UX and i am soon beginning my last semester of Uni and i would be lying if i said i wasnt worried.
On one hand these new developements with AI are really incredible and i am super interested and on the other hand i am scared of the thought that i spent 3 years learning all these new skills and mastering my craft, only to be replaced by a bot and become obsolete. I know we probably still have a good few years or so until it gets to that level and that i am probably being irrational but as a soon to be UI/UX designer, i cant help but worry.

This is what ChatGPT has to say about this -

It is unlikely that AI will completely replace UI/UX designers in the near future. While AI can be used to assist with certain aspects of design, such as generating design options or analyzing user data, it is not yet capable of fully replacing the creativity and critical thinking skills of a human designer. UI/UX design also involves understanding the needs and goals of the user, as well as the business objectives of the company, which require empathy and emotional intelligence that AI systems do not possess. Therefore, it is more likely that AI will augment the work of UI/UX designers, rather than replace them completely.

Sooner or later it will take over some of the simplest tasks, but on the other side I agree that AI could become a powerful tool for UI/UX design if used properly.
Also, one of possible AI functions could be a kind of automatic product customaising on a single user level.

I think the least threatened part of UX design by AI, is user reserach, since it needs understanding of human facial expressions, tone of voice, and other indicators of emotion. But I don't think it would be that far in the future before AI can recognize human emotion easily, considering how advanced it already is.

Today I built a prompt for ChatGPT that is designed to build UI components. I asked it to build a chat input component and it built the coolest chat input component I have ever seen, complete with polished and subtle animation. I think we're months away from seriously good production-ready AI driven UX tools.

Ive been watching 10 uiux ai videos today. This by far the most reasonable advice. I believe that if you keep your faith in your craftsmanship and continuously learn new ways of work, design and collaborate, There will be always job opportunities and work.

I mean if AI can interview users, empathize with their thoughts, then map out those thoughts into a user journey map, then I would say we’ve got nothing to worry about…for now.

UX is far more than making wireframes and pages.

My question is that what are the things a designer have to follow to survive in this career of ui ux in future?

I am serious about UX, but I do not think that I have a knack for it. What concerns me about AI replacing UX is that designers will cater to companies’ interests in accelerating it just to keep their jobs, but it will end up hurting future practitioners

I think it lacks a lot to even say that the AI replaces the UI/UX designer, I did several tests entering everything that is required and what it gives you is a sketch of a page without much design.

My Example:

create a homepage showing that i am a backend programmer in c#, nodejs, java and jquery javascript and angular frontend, dark mode, light mode, responsive robot fonts mobile, tablet and desktop, with div card, contact, it had to be created with html5, css, you can change color themes.

If you view coding and design as having a single best outcome, sure. While AI sites will suit some, it will feel like it, just like AI music. It’s the space between the notes that matters.

I liken AI to a manager, whose job is to make sure that his or her company or department runs optimally. On the other hand, I liken a human to an entrepreneur or leader, whose aim is to come up with new ideas that solve problems. Applying this comparison to the world of UX/UI design, I would say that AI will become very good at creating optimal websites and GUIs. However, I don't think it will, at least for several decades out, replace the creativity and ingenuity of humans to problem solve outside-the-box and come up with breakthrough solutions. I think the same could be said for AI's application to the field of art in general. It will eventually produce very good works that emulate particular artists or styles, but not create new styles or improve substantially on current ones. So, in conclusion, there will always be a demand for competent problem solvers and innovators, who can use their imagination. Meanwhile, like the advent of the automobile, telephone, and washing machine, AI will be another innovation that serves to lift man out of his drudgery.

Do you think it makes sense to study graphic design right now?

AI will most likely be used as a tool for UX designers. In terms of UI, it is possible it can really cut the need for them.

no, AI will not take anyones' job, at least not in the nearest future. this is sorta the same thing I hear every now and then when new AI development comes out: oh hey, soon we won't need frontend/backend developers anymore, AI will take our jobs.
no, it will not. at the very least it will make our jobs easier

btw looking forward for that 1M subs 😍
