As the katana-wielding, fan-favorite character Michonne on ratings juggernaut The Walking Dead, Danai Gurira has been one of the most recognizable television stars of this decade. And thanks to that success, she’s starting to make the transition to bigger roles in feature films. She played activist Afeni Shakur, the mother of rapper Tupac Shakur, in the biopic All Eyez On Me, and will play Okoye, one of the Wakandan bodyguards in Black Panther. But her acting might not be Gurira’s biggest achievement: she’s written four plays, with 2009’s Eclipsed—starring her Black Panther castmate Lupita Nyong'o—earning five Tony nominations. Gurira is a multi-talented artist dedicated to creating more acting and creative opportunities for black women, and given her success she’ll continue expanding those opportunities for years to come.
