I had very similar experiences. I grew up in a very similar church that you did and walked away for similar reasons as you did and also just complete rebellion in my tenage years. Whenever I would occasionally go to a church, the tears would come, usually during singing songs.I always felt that the tears were due to guilt I felt. However, I finally returned back to the Lord and prayed to find the right church. I was told by someone at church that the tears were because of the presence of the Holy spirit. Th e church I belong to now is completely different from what I grew up with. It is a smaller church of maybe 50 people and we are truly like a family. It is important to be in a church family. I think if you prayed for tge right church, God will lead you to one. There are some bad churches out there for sure but also there are many wonderful ones. I have found the smaller churches to be better and more like family.

Dear Brother Robert, until today I didn't ever realize the tears flowing down my face was the Holy Spirit. I always try to hold them back being taught tears are weakness, you fight them. When I would enter into a church as a visitor, before the service really would begin I would begin tearing up. Feeling everyones eyes me, what they were coming up with in their thoughts, thinking they were judging me, what horrid sin i was guilty of. I was hungry for Him, still am, and I have not attended for about 20 years now. I didn't trust church leaders, nor most of the body, and any questions were disregarded as if they were too busy or perhaps above them. I don't know why I'm sharing this, but perhaps it's a cry?

I have been truly blessed today, before me I grew in such a way that I had always quenched the holy spirit, not knowing. Forcing myself to be still and unmoved. I grew up going to church every Wednesday, Sundays, and sometimes Tuesday and Fridays too. if there was an activity, I wanted to go--as a child at I remember starting about six. The Holy Spirit in me was always there, naturally, then I learned about being baptized and proclaiming My Father and Jesus with such enthusiastic joy. What changed in me was my experiences watching the church go through several splits, finger pointing, child molesters, martial affairs, and a undying spirit of greed. The preachers were like a revoling door, and ran the funds dry with vanity displays. They should have taught us like you do. Listening to you I always receive the meat and not milk. Today is a day I will never forget. Thank you.
