I had swelling for long time, over a decade, maybe longer, pitted edema. I self-subscribed many treatments. Doc's thought those tormenting pressure socks would help as they did know cause. Those socks just transfer swelling! they do a darn thing!! For a recent infection, I got doxycycline. Edema disappeared and never returned. You may want to try it antibiotics if you don't know cause of swelling. May be bacterial.

would love to see more in depth, (eg how do you stage? What are the indicators of each stage? ) Too abstract. But gives me a starting point.
