The one thing everyone seems to forget about Denethor is that he has, and was using, a palantir. Denethor was sent into a pit of despair and hopelessness as Sauron manipulated the images he was seeing. Sauron was corrupting him so Minas Tirith didn't have a proper leader to defend the city. Denethor most likely saw the same thing Pippin did, with the white tree burning, it's also most likely how he knew of Aragon being in Rohan.

I always liked how Denethor's chair is placed at the base of the throne, as he's not the king a he doesn't have the right to sit on the throne. That's a nice touch.

It's a good thing Pippin didn't add, "He died trying to protect us from a flank of orcs. He did not succeed. We were captured and held prisoner anyway."

It would've been like, "My son died giving you a chance to flee for you life....yet you did not escape your captors. I....cannot even have the satisfaction of knowing my son died honorably....at least that would've been a measure of comfort and satisfaction to a grieving old warrior's heart..."

I truly feel sad for Denathor and even so, I wonder if he felt a small hint of pride knowing that Boromir went down refusing to die after being hit by one arrow.

At 2:50, for some reasons, I imagined an alternate scenario where Pippin more angsty about Boromir's death during Uruk-hai ambush to the point of not only he spoke to Denethor out of turn like that, but also slapped Gandalf's staff aside and glared at him. However, he couldn't bring himself to yell at the true white wizard for his absence during the same skirmish. It will likely made him more out of character than intended, but still...
