The dramatic arrest of Delhi's CM and one of opposition's predominant faces Arvind Kejriwal by ED comes close on the heels of all important lok sabha polls. The agency and the union government touts it to be a "war" against corruption while the opposition cries foul and accuses the government of being "vindictive".
This arrest is being linked to the alleged "liquor gate" that is being said to occur during the liquor policy framed by the Delhi government during the 2021-22 financial year. Keeping the legal intricacies and technicalities aside let's focus on the political part of it. With the AAP top leadership now in jail which includes Delhi's CM, Manish Sisodia Satyendra Jain and Rajya Sabha, MP Sanjay Singh the most valid question arises is how the party will gear up for polls when their top brass is absent from the poll arena. Kejriwal was the face, convener and mass leader of the organisation. He had an immediate connection with the disillusioned middle class from the heydays of the Anti corruption movement since 2011. He weaved the Anti-politics, Anti-establishment mood into populist sentiment and rode it to become CM three consecutive times. Sisodia was a government warhorse. He held most of the critical portfolios in the cabinet and many pet schemes that the AAP uses as its USP is credited to him. Sanjay Singh had a ground connection with the rank and file and contacts within the opposition parties which helped in alliance formation and seat sharing pacts. The immediate challenge is political messaging. If done right it can arouse sympathy among voters for his "victimization". Second is to keep the morale of workers alive who might feel low because of the arrest. Third is to draft a campaign strategy for the polls. It will be the biggest litmus test for the most successful political startup that got the national party status within a state and holding power in one union territory and a state with meagre presence in 4-5 states. Only time will tell whether they disintegrate or become stronger after this arrest.
