Humax Freesat HDD replacement after shows not recording

Can't record programs or programs failing to record? Unable to reformat the disk in your freesat box? You need to change the hard disk that's in the device and then reformat the new one to resolve your problem and get your programs recording again. This is a fairly easy job to do once you get into the case. You don't need to use the same type of hard disk, although if you have a video type disk then that would be better than a desktop hdd.

Our shows weren't recording and I couldn't reformat the hard disk as it kept failing so I decided to replace the hard disk for another 1TB drive that I had sat in the cupboard. It's a Seagate drive from an old desktop PC and it works perfectly after reformatting it so we can now record our shows again!

My 4 year old Humax wiped all my old recordings. After rebooting several times to bring them back, it eventually gave up, not even able to record. After having watched your video I took the plunge and ordered a new 1T drive from Amazon £27. Your video was exactly how it went and my Humax is back to normal. I’ve never taken a device apart to fix, but this gave me more confidence in the future.

The bracket is there to earth the top plate of the HDD to the circuit board. The bracket includes a metal coated pad which is conductive. The bracket and pad can be fitted in different ways to accommodate HDD's of different thicknesses. I was able to fit a 2 TB Western Digital Purple HDD which is thicker than the Seagate drive it replaced.

Thank you, very clear. Humax boxes vary a lot, different ways to remove the lid and there may or may not be a SATA lead.

You haven’t mentioned the whole point of your video, did it fix the issue ? The answer is probably not. Your video was basically- how to open the box and how to change a hard drive. If you had mentioned this in the headline of your video I suspect you wouldn’t get comments like these.

I don't see the need for the top mounting bracket as the HD is held in with four screws from the bottom. I think the only purpose for it is to protect against someone just removing the screws whilst not holding the HD in place. I bunged a full height HD in mine and dispensed with the top mounting bracket. The only issue now is whether there is sufficient heat dissipation.

Humax fit Seagate and Western Digital drives that are not the top of the range...try refitting with a 1TB Hitachi unit

It would have been sensible to check that there are good reasons why a video rated HD was used, do not just shove any old disc in there!
