He mentions a village- so, how about the ruins of the village. The houses are overgrown, entangled in large bushes, there's ghosts of the past inhabitants, talking about their cruel fate. Only one survivor remains- a child, holding onto a torch, with scrapes and bruises, wounds from the thorny bush striking at them- but yet- the fire has kept them from being killed. It turns out they're the grandchild of the veteran, so you can now take them to their grandparents and as a reward, you can now join them for soup.
