JUDY GARLAND three alternate takes from the film I COULD GO ON SINGING

Judy Garland sings alternate takes of Hello Bluebird, It Never Was You, and I Could Go On Singing from her 1963 film I Could Go On Singing. Love the spontaneous laugh at the end of "Singing" and the alternate of It Never Was You with a full orchestra blows me away. IMHO it is far superior to the live on set version ultimately used in the film.

Judy was the greatest singer of the standards ever. Streisand too. But Judy's desire to be loved to me is greater than Streisand's ego and anger. Both propel their voices like a rocket ship. This is simply my opinion. When I say standards, I guess I mean everything other than rock and opera and folk music. Standards are all of the great and popular music and is the music of America really. Standards and folk. I think that her voice was the greatest when she made Star.

Just wonderful! I agree with you totally on “It Never Was You”, one of my all time Garland favorites. This performance of it was far better than the one in the movie, though that one was also great. And I agree with Ian’s comment about “I Could Go On Singing”. That phrase, “Till the cows come home” ruined the song for me. It just sounds so ridiculous to me. But this video was wonderful. Thank you!

Buzz thank you for providing the film clips...this is the first time I ever strongly disagreed with you. "It Never Was You" works best with just piano...it is an intimate, heartbreaking story and should be told simply. You even hear the pianist working the sustain and soft pedals, further heightening the "night club"feel.

Absolutely savage, and way better than what ended up in the film. It almost makes me like the remarkably sub-par "Singing" because that laugh tells me that she thought it was ridiculous, too ("till the cows come home"? -- not Arlen and Harburg's finest moment). And yet she just slays this thing. Another home run for the archive, Buzz.

Why didn't they use this take of Bluebird??? She sounds so much more comfortable, the sound quality is excellent, Judy is in better voice Just because of a slight pause before "rosy" And I love this slightly slower tempo! Does anyone agree with me? bob in toronto
