"Gov. Tim Walz put his signature on the universal school meals bill Friday afternoon, providing free breakfast and lunch to all K-12 students, regardless of their parents' income.

"As a former teacher, I know that providing free breakfast and lunch for our students is one of the best investments we can make to lower costs, support Minnesota's working families, and care for our young learners and the future of our state," Walz said. "This bill puts us one step closer to making Minnesota the best state for kids to grow up, and I am grateful to all of the legislators and advocates for making it happen."

Schools must enroll in the federal program for free and reduced priced meals to qualify. Under this bill, the state would pick up the tab for the cost difference of covering everyone else who doesn't qualify, which is estimated to be $388 million in the next two-year budget. It increases after that."

The children are so happy, polar opposite of the Huckabee fiasco. Kudos Governor!

Good job, Minnesota. Real positive change. Thank you for governing for the people and not the special interest groups.

As a kid that grew up without any meals throughout all of my schooling... This is heart-warming. It was so hard to concentrate on an empty stomach. I hope schools around the world see this.

Finally a bill signing kids ACTUALLY approve of, unlike book bannings in Florida. Look at those happy kids. Look at them. Why would ANYONE be against this in the wealthiest nation on the planet????

We were going through some of my mothers old stuff helping her move years ago, and came across all of her perfect attendance awards from school. We were all like "Wow Mom... you had perfect attendance from 1st grade all the way through till 10th grade? That's amazing....you never said a word about that to us growing up". She had her head down and didn't look up when she said "I really never liked school that much". One of us asked her what she meant, and that's when she told us it was because if she hadn't gone to school everyday she would go hungry. She always told us they were poor growing up but until that day I never realized just how bad off they were. Good on this Governor.

I'm from Puerto Rico and there are a thousand issues with our government but we always had free breakfast and lunch since I can remember and I started school in the mid 90's. I was surprise to find out the they didn't do the same state side. I was in a middle class household most of my life but by my Junior year of HS my dad lost his job and my parents got divorced and the school meals were really my only options for breakfast and lunch. Good for Minnesota.

All kids in the United States should also have free government healthcare!

As a Minnesotan I was so happy when Walz won reelection. Because the other guy Scott Jensen (millionaire) wanted to ban abortion, and would’ve made it so we missed this cheerful moment. Thanks Tim ❤

I don't have kids, but I will gladly pay this tax for kids to eat good food.

Just wanted to say that Minnesotans reelected Gov. Walz for his 2nd term. This is what happens when you vote for the right people.

He also signed a bill to further protect abortion rights in our state.

i have never understood why we would charge ANYTHING for feeding school kids, in any state. Imo, its a horrible practice and its embarrassing to me when I consider the fact that we are one the richest countries in the world.

His smile when the kids went to hug him was genuine and heartwarming. The kids complaining in the background on audio was really funny, too. Those kids weren't acting 😂

Imagine if every single governor did this. We can expect all Republicans to cry about it.
