Alberta town battles goldfish invasion

The Town of Sylvan Lake has been trying to eliminate goldfish from a storm pond that connects to its namesake lake.

Anyone doubting how goldfish can be a menace, I have experienced it. We bought 4 fancy goldfish to have in our decorative backyard pond in Eastern Ontario. By the end of the summer we took 42 goldfish out. We drained our pond for the winter and found homes for the ones we couldn't keep. In spite of the pond being drained completely and then rain water freezing in it as it was only 18" at it's deepest, we found live goldfish in it the spring. They are a carp.

If anybody saw what an invasive species can do, check out the zebra mussle. You have to do whatever it takes as fast as you can. Otherwise, it will be too late.

Well I’m in Calgary. The problem around here and Chestermere and other places in Alberta is the use of live bait should be banned period. We now have a huge problem with Prussian Carp everywhere. And the rivers from south of Calgary up to Banff are full of Craw Fish because of the use of live baits. They should just be banned.

Feed them to your cat or chickens instead of throwing them in the pond
