💻 What is embroidery digitization?
Embroidery machines need specific stitch patterns, densities, and thread colors to function. This requires converting your design file into a machine-readable format, a process known as embroidery digitization. Digitization is essential for creating embroidery designs. It’s a separate step from fulfillment that’s not automatically included in Printful’s process. At Printful, we handle this crucial step for you to ensure your designs can be embroidered.

🪙 How much does digitization cost?
When you order your first embroidery product, there’s a one-time digitization fee based on the design type and placement. For example, flat designs for tote bags or hoodies and 3D puff effects for hats have a fee per file. Designs created with our Design Maker’s Text Tool have a lower fee. Adding an identical design to additional placements incurs a smaller fee, covering all placements. Each unique design needs separate digitization. Once digitized, you won’t pay the fee for subsequent orders. Prices can change, so check our FAQ page for the latest information.

🪡 Using the same digitized file on different embroidery placements
With Printful, you can embroider many different products, like hats and apparel. Every product has a slightly different embroidery area, so the digitization settings are slightly different for each. So, if you want to embroider a shirt with a design that was previously digitized for a hat, we’ll need to make digitization adjustments, which will cost extra.

🧑‍💻 Can I use my own digitized file for embroidery?
As a tech-savvy industry veteran, you might know how to digitize designs independently. While it’s an impressive skill, I hate to break it to you, but we don’t accept design files digitized outside of Printful. We need our machines to work flawlessly to ensure your customers get the same high-quality embroidered products worldwide. The only way to guarantee a smooth process in every fulfillment location is by having our own digitization procedures in place.
