The Tu-204 and Tu-214 are two medium-range narrow-body airliners developed by the Russian aerospace company Tupolev. These aircraft were designed to compete with Western models like the Boeing 757 and Airbus A321. While sharing many similarities, there are key differences between the Tu-204 and Tu-214.

The Tu-204 was developed in the 1980s and first flew in 1989. It was designed to replace the aging Tu-154 trijet. The Tu-204 is powered by two engines and can carry between 164 to 215 passengers.

The Tu-214 is essentially an improved version of the Tu-204. It is technically a Tu-204-200, a heavier version with extra fuel for more range. The main difference lies in its production location. While the Tu-204 is manufactured at the Aviastar plant in Ulyanovsk, the Tu-214 is built at the Kazan Aircraft Production Association in Kazan.

Key differences between the Tu-204 and Tu-214 include:

Maximum takeoff weight: The Tu-214 has a higher maximum takeoff weight, allowing for greater range and payload capacity.
Wing area: The Tu-214 has a slightly larger wing area for improved range.
Engines: Both aircraft use the Aviadvigatel PS-90 engines, but the Tu-214 typically uses the more advanced PS-90A variant.
Avionics: The Tu-214 incorporates more modern avionics.
Production location: The Tu-204 is produced in Ulyanovsk, while the Tu-214 is produced in Kazan.

While both aircraft have played important roles in Russian aviation, neither has seen widespread adoption outside of Russia and a few other countries. This is partly due to competition from established Western manufacturers and partly due to economic and political factors affecting the Russian aerospace industry.

Sanctions have revived once near-dead airframers (IL, TU & YAK) and created new ones like COMAC. Anyhow you see it, democracy is coming to the skies. Best wishes to Tu, IL and YAK!

Tu-204/214 are fine airliners, but the MC-21 is vastly superior. Depending how quickly Yakolev can produce them, I see the MC-21 filling this niche in the future.

204 IS discontinued. Only 214 remains in production.

The fact that despite their poor sales, Russia produced 2 similar planes in single digit numbers is one of the crazy things happening in Russia. If they had consolidated the funds to one plane then they might be able to improve it more and make it a 2 person cockpit plane.
