Ah, Narbonne. Years ago, whilst on an Interrail trip I happened to tell a Frenchman I was stopping off in Narbonne. His reaction was such that I might have asked him to bend over for 2 minutes such that I could inspect his hind-quarters. ‘Narbonne!?’ he spat, and proceeded to mutter something about a dull place full of nothing to see or do. Well, dear reader, he was wrong. For while Narbonne may not be the most scintillating, invigorating place on the planet, it’s not the drab nonentity my French interlocutor had painted it as. It has the 3 essential things I look for in any city I admire and desire to see: 1. Old Town - granted, Narbonne’s is small and a little down-at-heel, but for me, this low-key unpolished scruffiness only endears it more to me. 2. It’s southern. Random, I grant you. But being a born ‘n’ bred northern lad, all my favourite (certainly European) cities tend to fall below the 45th parallel. Why? Colour. Warmth. Smell of the Mediterranean. That sort of thing. Narbonne has that ‘ripening crate of peaches’-look I so warm to when I gaze upon a city. The wee canal in the centre with the (very) minor-scale Ponte Vecchio only adds to its charm. 3. Life lived. So many European cities, geared to the tourist, lack this vital quality. Venice, Bruges, Florence, any village you care to mention in Provence, etc. but here in Narbonne, the modest town is nondescript enough (a la Beziers) not to fall and surrender to any tourist hordes. The result being, you stroll around and see it, warts and all. There you have it. Narbonne: worth seeing and (just about) worth going to see.
