My Daddy did that when he retired...took over the cooking and his WAS definitely much better than my mother's.  He was a career fire fighter and they are known for their cooking.  Daddy was always the best cook though and his meatloaf was the best ever.  I would give $100 for one slice of it right now.   I miss him so much and his cooking.  Mama always acted like she did all the cooking though.  We (Daddy and I) made the Thanksgiving spread one year and Mama put the sage in the cornbread dressing and that's the only thing she did and then she acted like she cooked the whole entire meal.  LOL  Ah, memories. 

I can't say a thing about meatballs though.  LOL  OMG, I love Steve Harvey.  <3
