The image of the T-10M heavy tank being brought to the front lines has just appeared in the Russian press. This is a huge surprise move. Unlike the T-54/55 or T-62 that are still a lot in stock, the T-10M tank is currently only seen in museums, moreover their 122 mm shells are also rare, so the move Russia raises a lot of questions. The use of this tank as a fire support vehicle or self-propelled artillery was considered too "bulky" and unnecessary. It will take more time to see what special role the aforementioned heavy tank plays.

A fully loaded T-14 weighs 55 metric tonnes. The T-10 weighed 5 tonnes. However, engines are more powerful now. Leo 2, Challenger 2, and later Abrams are all heavy tanks. The first Abrams started as an MBT.

In the 80s, the USSR did not have a MAIN battle tank; it had 4 different tanks in service at the same time: T-80 (gas turbine), T-72, T-64, and diesel engine powered T-80UD [Kharkov wanted to call it the T-84].

It seems the Russians are pooling all latest tanks for their coming strategic offensive, while using old tanks for defense and infantry support.

Although this tank is old, it is by no means a waste. The Ukrainians even still use the 100mm mt-12 cannon barrel combined with the mtlb armored vehicle chassis, which is still effective in the role of artillery.

Well... in trench warfare, a tank is a tank, even man power Gatlin gun still very useful.
