When flying with family members I always book our seats together. It would be selfish of me to assume that a stranger would want to trade seats because of my situation. Plus we always sit in business class to get away from people with children. It's not my job to entertain your kid but I will play with a fur baby.

Regarding the flight, its so different here in aus. You book your flight but get assigned seats, not a sit where you like system. They mostly only have to pay extra to sit in an emergency row or for extra legroom.

extra fee for flight tickets is all wrong. I mean all wrong in how it was discussed. Airlines now charge a fee for the better seats. When you buy tickets online, it allows you to pick the seats you want. If you pick in the free area (seats that come with the price you pay) and if you need three seats or 2 seats and they are available, you choose them and they are yours. No extra fee to sit together. What winds up happening is that people buy the aisle and window seats so depending on when you buy the tickets, you may wind up with only middle seats available. However, because they charge a fee for the seats up front and the seats with the bigger legroom, those typically don't sell out as quickly. So if you want to sit together with your family, those blocks of seats are usually open at least early on . Aside from that, there no fee to sit togehter

With regards to the airline story: I might just not be paying attention, but I fly all the time and whenever I buy tickets for the family, I can choose seats, no problem and no extra charge. Now, maybe that's because I'm doing it all as one transaction. I guess if people are using different cards and booking under different frequent flier numbers, then I can see why the airlines would charge a bit for the service of changing seats around.
