I worked in Brooklyn NY during the 1970's we saw many manhole covers that hab been stolen. They were stolen by assumed to stolen by junkies, how sold them for a fix. Manhole cover weigh about 125-150 pounds and don't sell for much as scap metal. The possibly charge are severe aiding to a posable charges range from theft of public property to aiding to an accident or posable some sort of Homicide. Seems like a lot of work for little money. The cops couldn't keep up or just didn't want to go to that section of the city at 1 am-5 am. We were young, big and armed with manhole hooks( picture a woodstove poker, but twice the size) it's deadlyer than a pistol at 6-8 feet.
