The Robin is the seventh most common garden bird in the UK, and has been voted as the favourite bird in the country. They are not shy of people and often follow gardeners around looking for worms and other invertebrates. This makes up most of their diet in the spring and summer but they will also eat seeds, fruits and berries during the colder months.
Despite some theories, from a distance there isn’t a guaranteed way of telling if a robin is male or female as they look almost identical. They start nesting in march and will have between 4 and 6 spotted, cream coloured eggs. These take 14 days to hatch and then a further 14 days to leave the nest. Each pair will nest 2 or 3 times a year.
The average life span for a robin is just 2 years but the oldest on record made it to 8 years of age.
