Baofeng DMR RD-5R Dual Band Tier 2 Handheld

Here is a video showing the Baofeng RD-5R, and finally they successfully produced a fully Tier2 compatible radio.

Eric, these radios (MD-380/390, etc.) included, do not use a COM port. The radio contains the adapter for the standard USB cable. No serial adapter!

My UV-5R had low audio on built-in mic. Big improvement in audio with the RD-5R. I LOVE DMR. Such an easy, low cost digital mode to get into.

A few errors. Chirp doesn't work to program this radio (yet at least).

The charger base might be the same, but the charger wall wart is somewhat lower powered.

I own this Radio and have yet noticed any issue with it whatsoever. TX/RX voice reception sounds very clear even I talk to on the other side of the world "World Wide TG". I like using text messaging where I can make direct request to a certain ham user on a TG. I'm using the PAPA sys DMR which it doesn't have codeplug(s) premade specifically for Baofeng RD-5R radio. That's ok, I just made my own codeplug(s), and ever since it's been working wonderfully. My next plan project is to make my own antenna and stand-alone HotSpot (C4FM-Fusion). Cheers!!!

The thing about CHIRP is that it runs on linux, which I doubt the factory software does.

Two of them a dual band and a three band. the battery eliminator is a valuable toll for travel, no DMR yet.

Just ordered one a few hours ago even though my neighbor purchased one & the DMR side never worked.Worked great on Analog but Not on DMR? He spoke with them on the phone many times & it never worked so they told him to throw it away & not send it back.I am taking a chance so I guess I will see when it arrives.I have quiet a few Baofeng HT's & this will be my 1st DMR radio of any type.

There is analog setings in the other config menu. But you cant save it as channel.
You can just make a temporary rearengment.to make ofsets and tones and so on.

So far, has been a great radio. Yes, works on both time slots. I do have some issues with it. Why does the led need to flash red while scanning (i disabled the led). I want to be able to select a contact and have it stay. Right now, when you select 'view contact' and then PTT with that contact, it will transmit to that contact; but the menu will time out in a few seconds and will return to the default contact that was programmed in that channel. I only want to program in one (or two in the case of the dual time slot) repeater frequency, programming in a channel for each talkgroup with each repeater seems silly and a waste of space. But really this is not such a big deal as I just put the default contact as the main one i use. There are other issues like I caught it rebooting itself every now and then... and a default promiscuous mode on power up would be nice. But it is good that it does have promiscuous mode when you hit the monitor button. Sorry for being a little long winded.

The programing interface of the Radioddity RD-5R is a parralel device, it does not use a serial port to connect. When you connect for the first time Windows 10 sees an MCU mouse Demo device. This is a Boafeng case with radioddity radio in it hence it is very similar to the radioddity GD-77. Checkout my page on this Radio and DMR in General at tinyurl.com/DD5LP-DMR.
