One of the strongest parts of the French mission tree that not a lot of people talk about is the "Kingdoms of Spain" mission. If you do it by conquering 15 provinces, it triggers an event "Victory in the Franco-Iberian War" which gives Spain/Castile/Aragon CORES on all the Iberia region if they are your subject.

Pivoting to the 'restore Rome' thing killed it for me. I was hoping to see a France run, *as France, * not blobbing.

Instead of no-cb Byzantium as France I usually vassalise Cyprus after the appanages are annexed and then help them form the Latin Empire via their mission tree. Having the Latin Empire as a march holding the Balkans and Anatolia with French primary culture/catholic religion and Lusignan dynasty is cooler in my opinion. That said, I am not a "reform the Roman Empire" freak like Ludi and will probably only do it in a proper Byzantium run.
