Why Airless Tires Are So Tricky

These ties have NO AIR in them. They were created by Michelin to stop flat tires and the large amount of resulting rubber waste. They work by combining an aluminum wheel and an outer structure made from a flexible but strong material called glass fiber reinforced plastic

But Michelin and others, including NASA, have been working on airless tires for years… so why don’t we have them yet??

Well, turns out air is really good at dealing with the heat and pressure that builds up in the rubber as your tires get repeatedly compressed and decompressed under the weight of the car. A tire fully inflated with air also deforms less, making it more efficient for your engine to rotate it.
A stable, cool, and efficient airless tire is really tricky! But Michelin says they should be available for purchase by the end of this year.

We’ll see! I’d love to never get another flat tire.

The Big Air lobbyists will never allow this to happen.

I hope this doesnt end up being a rushed product that leads to airless tires being rejected again for another decade or more

I was at a event for wheelchair users yesterday where these wheels were they showed these wheels for both manual as electric wheelchair. You have no idea how exited my wife got at never being stranded again with a flat tire

It's good to see the reason WHY these miracle technologies never reach massive production scale. Mostly people just reporter the hype and never the second part of why the hype didn't become reality.

Noise is also an issue with these tires from what ive heard. Its just hard to make an airless tires that can compete on all the important metrics. Hopefully we'll get there though

We've had these for forever now. They tested them on HMMWV's while I was deployed to Afghanistan. They work pretty well on sand, but they wear unevenly and too quickly on pavement. They also give a harder ride, which is hard on your vehicle's suspension. Great concept, but not all the way there yet.

Air in tires also adds to driver comfort driving over something. You better hope your suspension is top notch if you wanna drive with airless tires

Another huge issue for tires is that they wear down and eventually don’t get enough traction to maintain a safe braking distance, hopefully this is accounted for too. 🤞🏼

Most likely, the best solution here is to only use airless tires as an emergency tire only. Like in the event of getting a flat tire.

I have airless on my Scooter. Before that I got flats every few months. Best decision to switch.

Also air is really great in dealing with impacts like pot holes which was a big problem for previous airless tires to deal with

Ive been hearing the same story about "airless tires being on the market by the end of the year" for like 10 years

I’m sure Armor All is going to love this.
