Basic Model Window Scratchbuilding

Learning to scratch build model windows can expand possibilities for a model builder or hobbyist. You're no longer limited by what's available off the shelf.

Scratch building windows is really not that difficult. Here's a basic technique for double-hung window construction. Build a few and you can get pretty efficient at it.

Of course this basic technique can be expanded and added to. You could add more prototypical details like a sloped sill and additional trim and stops. Or even use those stops to make windows openable if you like.

This is ABSOLUTELY, without question, the best sash window tutorial I have viewed. Great attention to detail with an excellent result! Kudos!

A different method from the way I make my windows. Very nice way you showed your method step by step! I've only built one house in 1/2 in scale. I will be working on a school building in 1/8 in scale soon and will consider doing a step by step of my window making methods. Thanks for posting this. I has truly inspired me!

Just curious. The window that you are making in this video looks bigger than O scale. Are you using traditional O scale of 1:48 or is this in between O and G? Like a 1:24 or something.

Your windows look great and will have to try painting the mullians.  I would however recommend taping a 1/8 or 1/4" piece of plywood inside the mitre box to save the saw blade and it will give you a sharper cut on the back side of the wood.

Beautiful work. If I could just keep from slicing off the tip of my middle finger when using straight edge and razor.

Just get several of the prism shaped draftsman rulers, many scales available. Also way easier to hold on to.

What about stenciling on the mullions: mask off area then smooth on thick gesso, joint compound, or whatever white paste would be most durable.
