Couple of things I’ll correct since CNBC took the fear-mongering route on this report. “6 of the states worst fires.” I’ll correct that to tell you that they mean 6 of the 20 worst fires happened this year. They don’t say the denominator for some reason likely in order to affect opinions to be even more afraid. That’s the same reason they bring up the massive 3rd and 4th largest fires the state has ever seen, the LNU and SCU which despite being so massive, have not caused the extent of damage of some smaller fires. They also are 95% and 92% contained, so that line about how they are “ongoing” is purposely misleading as well, as firefighters almost have them out and they are not the real threat anymore. Anyway, I’m not trying to downplay the severity of the situation at all. I just think it’s important to call out the media when they try to intentionally push narratives and spread extra fear rather than give clearer explanations of the facts that they have but decide to leave out of their reports.

We need a policy that allows for thinning of the forest to natural tree densities. Over planting and fire suppression have created an abundance of fuel. Firebreaks need to be cut to seal fires off to quadrants. Our view of environmentalism needs to change from a 70's conservation mode to a management and preservation mode.

This will be an unpopular opinion, but you need to let those fires burn. I used to work in the mountains teaching outdoor science, we know these forests have a burn cycle that has been disturbed by humans. If we are unwilling to work hard and remove the dead brush, we need to stop building in these forests and let nature take care of the overgrowth.
