Just a tip for using side sense:

It's highly customizable. Once you're in side-sense settings you can do quite a few things to improve/personalize its functionality and ease of use.

For starters, you can move the sensing area inside the screen which will make it much easier to engage - it will appear as two sidebars. You can control their transparency, length, and location. Furthermore, you can also adjust the sensitivity of double-tapping and swiping side-sense.

Then, you can customize what each gesture does. Just as an example, on my Xperia 1ii I chose split-screen selection mode when swiping up, taking a screenshot when swiping down, and one-handed mode when double-tapping.

The 4K HDR (10bit) 120fps slow-motion can be found in Cinema Pro.

having the xperia 1 I like what sony does, but software and just the smoothness of the phones needs work for myself. AND the display brightness... that is a yikes for me

Both the 1 II and 5 II are incredible smartphones. There's not a lot of difference between them; the 5 II has a higher refresh rate, a 2K (Full HD Plus) display compared to the 1 II's 4K, and the screen is slightly smaller (6.1").

If I had to choose either of them (1 II or 5 II), I'd honestly go for the 1 II.
