Okay, not scientific in any way for the acoustics part, but if nothing else it gives you an idea of the quality of the sound coming from the coolers of these cards.

Best acoustics demonstration I've ever seen (heard!). Very telling. Thx for this.

as much as i couldn't hear much (computer fan, blowing cold air, don't know why its running), the other sounds that you did show just how quite all of these are

Or (another crazy theory) I got a Titan ahead of launch so I did a bunch of videos about it just like I do with every video card I get ahead of launch. Check out my 6870 coverage ;)

My understanding is that Adobe Premiere Pro isn't able to take advantage of CUDA acceleration across multiple GPUs (either in SLI or multiple GPUs on the same card), so the second card would be under utilised. However, since the Titan is encroaching into Quadro territory, I'd be very interested to see some Premiere Pro benchmarks of the Titan vs. a few other cards. Very little of the Titan coverage across the 'net seems to be mentioning this aspect so far.

Maybe they should get software to get avg dB ratings, just a thought, would be much easier for some to get a sense of the noise levels.

I own a Diamond 7970 reference card and I've OC my card to 1050mz before and the fan speed never got above 43% on Auto settings and the temps never got above 77 degrees and the sound? it sounds like a regular case fan blowing.

I would literally have to put the fan in manual mode and crank it up to max to get it to sound like that, the one in this vid is just hilarious!

I have a XFX Double D R7970, and really silent even under gaming load. You have to look if the fans are spinning to see if they are working (you won't hear them). And the temps are great even after some overclocking.
Pick better your manufacturer next time you buy a high end graphics card.

sound-wise i like the 680 among others, and holy cr*p that ati card is a rocket!
also i did not expect that hair dryer lol, i turned up my headset at the beginning to hear the fan better, then that blower came along. i was like wt*

He's right, some pumps have a very steady "whine" noise.

lol the 7970 reference is a total nogo for me! I recommend at least a Twin Fan Version for a quit system ;)

Newegg released the EVGA and ASUS versions of this card today

It almost seems like you guys had the fan at max % or you guys have a defective fan in that 7970.
Seriously, for the fan to be that loud would mean it ramping up to a very high % to get lower thermals. My reference 7970 has never sounded like that or had that high of thermals on an OC.

You love it when they overvolt cards in a way that was not meant to happen and get their hand slapped.

The 7970 reference cooler is horrific! Not sure why anybody would buy a reference card when there are so many great non-reference ones out there. In fact, I'm not even sure you can buy a reference 7970GE at the moment...

I do not have Far Cry 3, however I have never had trouble with Micro stuttering and I can get up to 16xMSAA on Crysis 3 and many other games.

i say "i have" but it was realy a family computer. 2.5GB ram,
pentium 4 3.0Ghz (HT enabled) with radeon xpress 200 mobo graphics. (i later upgraded to a 6450)

'Reference' Radeon cards seem to always sound like jet engines under load. I have an old 4890 and if the fan gets above 35% it starts getting annoying. 50% and above and it sounds like it's ready to explode. That red and black enclosed plastic cover and the small fan at one end tends to force the card to blow really hard to keep the card cool.

I will NEVER get a reference Radeon card ever again.

lol @ Linus getting carried away with the noise comparison at the end :)

Far Cry 3 appears to be more optimized on AMD GPUs. You can see this in benchmarks everywhere. Such as Crysis is more optimized for Nvidia GPUs; however, I would agree that they are cheaper but honestly, it all comes down to personal preference. If you prefer Nvidia for a valid reason, go for it! Same for AMD GPUs.
