Sunak to Covid inquiry: Eat Out to Help Out was the right thing to do

The government’s controversial Eat Out to Help Out scheme was a “safe” and “sensible” policy, Rishi Sunak has insisted.

In seeking to defend his signature Covid policy as chancellor, Sunak claimed the scheme was the “right thing to do”.

Asked about criticism from Sir Chris Whitty, who called the scheme “eat out to help out the virus”, Sunak said he had “ample opportunity” to raise the issue and “chose not to do so”.
