A Russian Su-35 fighter jet grazed the nose of a US Air Force F-16 fighter jet that was conducting a routine intercept of a Russian aircraft off the coast of Alaska in a dramatic incident on Sept. 23. The US military called the encounter “unsafe,” saying the Russian pilot’s actions were “unprofessional and put everyone at risk.”
The US F-16 fighter jet, assigned to the North American Aerospace Defense Command (NORAD), conducted the interception in the Alaskan Air Defense Identification Zone (ADIZ) in international airspace. Video and images released by NORAD showed the F-16 shadowing the Russian Tu-95 before the Su-35 grazed the nose of the F-16 in what is known as a “header” maneuver.
