One of the most classic lines that goes totally unnoticed. Also, as emotional as Gimli’s answer is, he literally provided zero valuable information. Gotta love the dwarfs

People don't realize, in Old English and Scandinavian and many Indo-European languages, to "Fall" in battle is common. Falling in battle means dying, so what Gimli is doing here is actually two-fold. He is telling her the truth, but she thinks he is simply saying "He fell (in battle, as is custom)."

"He fell" is that perfect description that works for the situation in modern English as well as a more archaic form. Could easily mean "he fell in battle, " too.
