King Crimson - Peoria (Earthbound (Live))

Earthbound stands as one of the most gritty and powerful live recordings of its era, showcasing King Crimson's Islands line-up comprising Boz Burrell, Mel Collins, Robert Fripp, and Ian Wallace. In a manner that surpassed many of their contemporaries, the band pushed the boundaries of their music to the limits.

Originally released in 1972, Earthbound consisted of a collection of deliberately lo-fi live recordings from King Crimson's Islands era tour in the USA. It was among the earliest, if not the first, "official bootlegs" to be issued by a major rock band.

Today, with Robert Fripp and Mel Collins having appeared in the 2014/2021 King Crimson line-ups, and the music from the Islands era being a regular feature of their live shows, the interest in Earthbound and that particular period of King Crimson's music is arguably higher now, fifty years after its original release, than it was at the time.

Fripp hearing Boz scat is probably like "How are we gonna keep up with Mahavishnu"?? I love this track.

a unique thing. I know jazz, rock, folk, classical well, but I have never heard anything like this before! Just great!

It has to be said that the creative leap from this version of KC to the subsequent Bruford/Wetton era is significant. Islands has its moments, but the band as a whole seemed less interested collectively in pushing the boundaries that Fripp was intent on addressing. Though competent, this could be any band of that era with its roots in blues and R&B. Crimson were so much more than that and their subsequent releases demonstrated a musical vision far beyond their peers. I recall hearing this when it was released and it contributed to my declining interest in KC at the time. I backtracked from hearing Red to check out LTIA and SABB and have continued ever since to follow KC.

Do you think Boz was planning to do such wild vocals or did he just randomly start doing that?

Am I right in saying Fripp doesn't participate in this jam like piece. If memory serves me correctly, l think this was an album Fripp hated at the time. Don't know how he feels about it now. There was much consternation within the band at this time, and l think definitely musical differences led to the split of the Islands band. This track bares no resemblance to the King Crimson l know and love. There was a critic who said there was no such thing as a bad King Crimson album. Tend to agree with him. But this album definitely is not my favourite. There are better live albums from this band from this period now available. "Ladies of the Road" is one l have, which is an excellent example of early '70s King Crimson.

For Low Fi recording it sounds great, but i wonder if ATMOS remix could be applied to such recordings. The music definitely deserves it.
