How to Perform the Weber & Rinne Hearing Tests | Clinical Examination Skills

In this video, I demonstrate how to perform the Weber & Rinne Hearing Tests. These two screening hearing examinations are commonly used in the primary care setting as an initial evaluation of hearing loss. The Weber and Rinne Tests are very quick and easy to perform during your patient assessments and are essential clinical examination skills to master, especially as a provider in the primary care setting. If there is any concern for hearing loss after performing the Weber & Rinne Hearing Tests, then further evaluation by an ENT specialist is likely needed.

I am a dual certified family and pediatric nurse practitioner. I worked many years as a registered nurse (RN) in the emergency room, then continued working in the emergency room after becoming a nurse practitioner (NP). I also did travel nursing as an ER nurse. When one fails this sort of hearing screening, it is much more efficient to refer directly to an audiologist because that is where the patient is going to end up at some point in the process. For those cases that need ENT treatment, the audiologist will make that referral based on formal testing results.

Is the air time supposed to equal the bone time so that it translates to 2x as long, or is it supposed to literally be 2x as long?

Thank you for the helpful video. I have a question because my mum is a bit worried. Her doctor performed the Weber test and she could not hear anything, but for the Rinne test everything was ok. Does that mean that the Weber test was not conducted properly?

Can refer to ENT who will then refer to an Audiologist whom are hearing specialists (Au.D.) that will do a thorough evaluation of a hearing function!
