Black Motion celebrate iconic debut album with a 10th Anniversary reissue.

Originally released in 2011 'Talking To The Drums' marked a radical influence on South Africa’s vibrant House Music scene establishing a sound in the South African House dialect all their own. The band stated at the time that “You are born into House Music. There’s nobody that comes from the hood that doesn’t understand House Music. Your daily life is House Music and that’s why we incorporated it into our lives...”

Talking To The Drums was the first to completely realise (and build upon) the foundations of the drum, with rhythms structured around native musical languages informed by a rich cultural heritage of South Africa. The duo drew inspiration from the voyages Thabo, the duo’s percussionist, embarked upon during his conversations with the drums.

The album vividly retold a time of dance as a form of liberation. Talking To The Drums explored rhythmical arrangements closer to Kwaito than House Music, and diasporic influences from the wider canon of contemporary music that informed the duo’s work. Talking To The Drums laced an intricate, and deep narrative tracing a fluid line through South Africa’s cultural diversity.

Talking To The Drums not only narrated the connection between Black Motion and indigenous instrumentals, tones, and sounds but vividly reflected the internal connection between Thabo and Bongani showcased on standout tracks like Father To Be (featuring the flamboyant Dr Malinga).

“The source of all communication, the most important part of our culture are the drums. Everything we do, we do with drums. Whether it’s the healing... anything that’s cause for celebration. The drums are the key to everything and that’s why we incorporated it in our music. When we’re on stage and we’re playing the drums it touches people...” - Black Motion

Take me back to those days when after schools and holidays felt like forever. This era of South African music will forever have a special place, the childhood memories all here. Nostalgia and time travel exist through music. 2023/10/31❤🙌🏽
