David Gilmour auctioned his guitars and raised $21M for a climate change charity

Pink Floyd's David Gilmour auctioned 126 of his guitars for a record-breaking $21 million at a New York charity auction Thursday to fight against climate change.

The auction lasted eight hours and had bidders from 66 countries around the world, according to British auction house Christies, which handled the sales.
"The Black Strat," a 1969 Fender Stratocaster which Gilmour used to record Pink Floyd albums "The Dark Side of the Moon," "Wish You Were Here" and "The Wall," sold for $3,975,000 -- a new world record for a guitar at an auction.

A red 1984 Fender Stratocaster belonging to Pink Floyd guitarist David Gilmour was auctioned for $615,000 at Christie's in New York City.
Gilmour bought the guitar in May 1970 to replace his first black Stratocaster, which had been purchased only six weeks earlier, but was stolen in New Orleans on tour along with the rest of Pink Floyd's equipment. He purchased the guitar new at Manny's, an iconic New York City guitar store where many famous musicians bought instruments.
The replacement Stratocaster differed slightly from the stolen one because it had a maple neck instead of a rosewood neck. Over the years, according to Rolling Stone, Gilmour made several changes to the instrument to get the perfect sound.
Gilmour's rare 1958 Gretsch White Penguin sold for $447,000, a new auction record for a Gretsch guitar.
"You know something? For me, I can let go of it," Gilmour told Rolling Stone. "It's going to bring a lot of people to have a look at this sale, and it's going to do that job. It's a lovely guitar. ... I did my 'Comfortably Numb' solo on it. The notes for the beginning of 'Shine On You Crazy Diamond' fell out of it one day.
Indianapolis Colts owner Jim Irsay made the winning bid for the collectible item.
He tweeted about the instrument's history and how honored he was to bring the piece to the public.

I was 13 when I first heard Pink Floyd. David is the reason I ever picked up a guitar. 30 years later, I'm slowly building my guitars to match and buying all the effects I can. Even contacted and spoke to BK Butler himself to custom order a matching tube driver. DG is an inspiration to generations past and many more in the future. Not just the most brilliant guitarist in history, but a great man who has raised money again and again for charity.

I wish there was a way to meet him one day, but I'll keep on playing David Gilmour and Pink Floyd songs until the day I'm gone. My daughter will continue on after me, the guitars I have built with her will be hers.

Dear Mr Gilmour

My Grandfather taught me from an early age, that Pink Floyd was an experience, and he was right, 20 years, after his passing, I get to pass on the same beautiful experience that you have given us, that is your music. Im sure wherever Grandad is, he"ll still be listening. Thank you for your talent, and being the humble master of your art. Thank you from New Zealand (Ps...Please come and play here in Christchurch!) You are truly and gentleman. Thank you

Please don't retire Sir David Gilmour . If you retire from music, whom can we get to hear to relax . Whenever I suffer from any kind of depression, I always hear Pink Floyd . Now what will happen if you retire ?

If they had raised 21 billion, The climate will still change. Mother Nature can't be bought off. It's an insult to think she can be. Climates change and to think we can change that is against her will. DAVID, you are a musical genius and i applaud your life. It changed mine. And my skull is far from numb.

More people need to see this. Climate change is real. If you don't believe, please take out time and search about it. No ones gonna take your money in the name of climate change and waste it. And if you're somebody who's going to waste people's money like this, you have got to think about 10 years from now. That money won't matter if you won't have enough food to eat, air to breathe and land to live. We all are in this together. Every bit counts!
