Dear All, This is a Greek song the title of which is MISIRLOU meaning "Egyptian girl", , written by a Greek person who loved this girl when in Egypte there was living in Alexandria a big Greek community which left Egypte in the decade of 1950 because of political events at that moment. It is not a surprise that the Greeks can write such beautiful songs because they have invented MUSIC 3000 years ago.

The song was first recorded in 1927, in Athens, Greece, by the rebetiko-tsifteteli orchestra of Michalis Patrinos. This music is a revival of ancient, traditional, folkloric Eastern music, claimed by various communities, including Egyptian, Greek, Arab and Sephardic Jewish, of the ancient Ottoman Empire.

Let's give props to Dick Dale & the DelTones. Long live the
King of the Surf Guitar! He made that song famous way before Pulp.

Misirlou / Μισιρλού is a very old song, a Eastern Mediterranean song.
Typical Greek Anatolian music (Byzantine) mixed with Arabic melodies.

"Misirlou" is an Ottoman folk song. It was widely known in Arab, Armenian, Greek, Jewish and Turkish communities by the 1920s. We don't know which community it originates from, but we know it originates from somewhere in the Ottoman Empire.

Dick Dale was familiar with the Arabic version, from his Lebanese family. His Lebanese uncle played "Misirlou" on the Arabic Oud string instrument with a fast-picking technique. Dale translated that onto an electric guitar, creating the modern "Misirlou" we all recognize today and giving birth to the surf-rock genre.
