The main point of the barbaric story is often missed. It is not about who is the strongest warrior, and whether Barbarik was strong or not. It is about blindly following the rules or instructions without thinking. Barbarik stated he would fight the weaker side, nobel but when followed rigorously leads to Barbarik constantly switching sides and destroying everything, which is simply stupid. The message is, that the rules and instructions are only guidelines but you need to use your brain. Further in the story, Krishna also asked Barbarik to give his head, again giving the message that if you are not going to use your head then might as well give it away.

The story is slightly morphed... Barbareek (pronounced as "Reek") was blessed with a boon and promises his mother that he will fight for whoever was weak and with the boon he could destroy the army of the opponent..the dilemma here was that he would constantly switch sides between the Kaurav and Paandav to support the "weaker" army resulting in the ultimate destruction of both the armies..thus Lord Krishn convinced him not to participate in the war and he witnessed the entire war through his severed head still worshipped as Lord Shri Khatu Shyamji baba.. After this incident, Lord krishna decided that Barbarik would now be known as "Shyam" an alternate name for Krishna ji. Since then barbarik is known as "Khatu Shyam", worshipped by lakhs of devotees.
