Publix donates their leftover deli bread to homeless shelters and I think every restaurant should do that with still edible food.

I used to be a penera bread employee and we did this. It was to the point where one family was sitting outside waiting for the bagged bread and I literally handed the bread to them everytime rather than throwing them out.

I used to be a manager there when I was younger. I sold the bakery items at 50% an hour before close. After closing, churches from around the area came and picked up the rest. That’s how I think all locations should handle excess

All corporate Panera locations donate their bread at the end of the day, I believe the franchises have the option to participate but are not required to participate in the donation program and often throw out remaining baked goods at the end of the day. Since Panera doesn’t use any preservatives in their bread, the bread will mold after just 2-3 days in most circumstances, though some items may stay fresh for longer

Jimmy John’s also does this with all their bread at the end of the day. They discourage/scare anyone out of bringing it to a shelter but luckily that didn’t stop some people from doing so.

this is so real used to work at panera and they only donated leftover baked goods on sundays. which means every other day we threw away trash bags of baguette and country rustic and tomato basil and all the other stuff we didn’t sell including any extra cookies or pastries. the worst part was management always had a stick up their ass and wouldn’t let us have anything, except for Matt, he was a real one

I can't speak for every panera, but I work at a panera currently, and we work with local shelters and non-profits and donate our leftover breads every day besides Saturday, and our staff gets the bread on Saturday

This is why Publix is such a likeable brand since they have some of the best practices for food wastage like donating all perishable but still edible food, even though it does cost slightly more shopping there I think its better supporting an actually moral company then ones like walmart.

The Panera I work at actually donates our bread and baked goods to a local homeless shelter at the end of every night. It varies from around 2-4 garbage bags full of bread and pastries at the end of every night so it’s a pretty good amount

actually if you volunteer to do it, panera let’s you pick up some of the unsold baked goods and donate it. my family did it a few times, although idk if that’s just our local panera

In WV we do doughnations, which is where we donate to local food pantry’s or churches. I literally have 3 pickups a day that arrive at our store. Idk who owns this one, but we don’t trash any baked goods including pastries or breads.

This is so damn sad. Thank you guys for sharing awareness. These corporations are honestly draining our society and paying back minimal wage while wasting resources and human’s precious time. The effort of those people who grow and pick the wheat, the truck drivers who drive hours delivering, those who mix the dough and bake the bread. It’s sickening that we as human kind allow this to go on as if this earth belongs more to the 1% than the 99. 😤

I love how these corporations would rather throw out good food than give it to homeless shelters.

We truly do live in a dystopia

Every company who trashes “left over” food should have an after hours donation program or something like that, it is ridiculous I keep hearing and seeing this. I mean, if it's spoiled or bad, don't give it to anyone, but it if it’s just stuff that won't keep overnight or for the next day that is still technically edible donate it for the love of god. At least they bag it before throwing it out seems like they care about some aspect of people who need to eat or go hungry because they are without a job or homeless, but I don’t know anymore. Plastic waste is another issue. Problems just getting bigger and bigger and we need help. No one is going to help us here so we need to band together and stop this from happening be humankind.
