Whilst the eyes of the world are fixated on Russia's border with Ukraine, Moscow is beginning to make major moves 7500km to the East on Russia's Pacific coast. The major powers have begun their pivot to Asia, and now Russia is scrambling to reassert itself into a struggle unfolding right in its own backyard. Will Russia be able to regain regional leadership, or will they take a back seat to an ascendant China?

On the panel this week

- Neil Melvin (RUSI)

Great job, as always. As an American I always find it perplexing why people get blown away by traveling multiple time zones. New York and Seattle are 4 times zones away, yet you can easily drive it in 2 days (I’ve done it myself a couple of times). The time zone difference y’all are mentioning is only 7 zones apart, yet it takes a week for the Russians to move across. If anything, it just speaks to how crappy Russian infrastructure is. By extension, it makes one wonder how capable their military is as well.

Great podcast
On the economy of Russia being a similar size to Australia or Spain or Italy, it's important to note that what you are comparing is NOMINAL GDP, which is useless when discussing Russian military matters as exchange rate has zero effect on Russia's MIC. Damn near all of Russias equipment is produced inside the country and those that produce it are not paid in dollars but in Ruble. If that's the case then the appropriate GDP method to use is Purchasing Power Parity, which accounts for the difference in price of goods, with that method, Russia is the 5th or the 6th largest economy in the world, above or below Germany. There is a reason Russia can launch several ships, submarines, planes, tanks e.t.c every year on $60 Billion defence budget and Saudi Arabia (nor any of the big European spenders) simply cannot.
It's become a meme almost at this point, and a bit of a lazy one.
