If they don't play it at my funeral… I’m not going

When my older brother died in 2018, I got in the car after the hospital visit. This song was playing on the radio. This song is forever etched in my mind with my brothers death. Miss you Mike.

I was young when Dylan first did this song, now I'm 72, and loved this version when it came out in 1991, to me this is the best version!

This song reminds me of my friend Keith! He used to play this song on his guitar all the time! I sure miss my friend!

I remember listening to this with all my friends back in 1991. I seen the guns play st. Louis Riverport in 91. It was the riot of the century. I'll never forget.

is about accepting and embracing the inevitability of death, and the idea of never truly being given a fair chance beyond the life that you live. The singer seems to be reflecting on his life, feeling like he has been wronged, and considers death an alternate way out from the oppressive life that he lives. He asks his mother to take away his gun—the one thing that gives him a semblance of power—and feels himself being ”knockin on heaven's door, ” metaphorically indicating he is coming close to death. The spoken solo in the middle provides insight into the state of life the singer has been living, and the fact that it is not luck that will get him out of it alive. The song is a reflection of our mortality, and a reminder to make the best of our limited time on earth.
