The Gunslinger (Dark Tower #1) by Stephen King

Like any great read, getting through the first part is usually the toughest. Not only do you need to read the entire series before you comment, but also the talisment and I believe the dark house. You can find the commentaries on several of the SK blogs. 17 years some of us waited on the completion. Count yourself lucky.

I am SO excited that you're reading these. It starts to really get good in the next few, and then you'll have to see it through! You might not like the way Book 7 ends, though -- a lot of people didn't, but if you get that far and then think about some of the stuff in the earlier books, it makes sense.

I just finished re-reading the book(1st time was back in the 90s) and we have the same rating. The first book is just an introduction and books 2,  3 and 4 are far better. Thumbs up! for all Stephen King readers

Yeah, I just finished this 1st book and was not impressed at all. Probably my least favourite King book Ive read to date :(
I hope they get better, and have an actual story to them, rather than random stuff happening... or not happening as teh case may be!

Roland really is more of a tragic character than anything. He's dedicated his entire existence to the pursuit of this quest, sacrificing possessions and people along the way. The quest for the Dark Tower and the Man in Black have consumed his life until there is nothing else left for him. But despite it all, he is still doing his damnedest to do the right thing.

I understand why you were not hooked immediately w/ this book, but I'm glad to hear you will be reading book 2, because that is where shit really starts to open up and the true story begins. I'm through the first four, and I can honestly say it is one of the best series' I've ever read. Also, I think Roland will grow on you a bit, as you learn more about his life.

A lot's revealed later on and there starts to be a hell of a lot balls in the air after a while. I think something that confuses people is the whole Arthurian thing crossed with Western/cowboy aesthetics and setting.

I like Roland, he's tough and grizzled but still has enough humanity left in him despite what his quest keeps making him do.

I also thought gunslinger was a 3.5 out of 5, maybe 4. Made me think of Clint Eastwood in Good, Bad and Ugly which I love

Roland, as well as most of the characters, are very one-dimensional in the first book. Once you get to the second, and especially 3 and 4, you really start to love him and his friends. Really, the first one is IMO nothing more than a setup for the rest of the series.

I strongly recommend to read all books of the series and then reviewing them. They make much more sense, and are lot of better if read all at once. It's something like Witcher series - anyone is good or great, but if you read them all at once they just left this great and heavy impresion of something epic.

recommendation: Dark Inside by Jeyn Roberts. Also, make sure to check out the second book, Rage Within.
