We all know who the true monster of the sea is: Poseidon. Just ask Medusa and Demeter.

makes sense that H.P Lovecraft got all of his influences from ancient mythologies, he just explained in more detail on the various monsters.

I don't exactly know why, but I always imagined Charybdis to be a giant... frog, whose belly would inflate with water before she spewed it all out again.

It is excellent that you covered the changes in the story over time. These were stories in the bardic tradition, orally told and seldom written down. Hence, constantly changing. For a good reference on Greek and Roman mythos covering these stories from their earliest to their last versions, I can highly recommend Bell's New Pantheon. It was written in the 1700s and can be difficult to find; but, is well worth the effort.

The saying 'stuck between a rock and a hard place' comes from the myths of Scylla and Charybdis.

I remember being a young kid and being absolutely terrified of Charybdis. I am 21 now and Charybdis still haunts me...

reminds me of the scene from Pirates of the Caribbean: At World's End, where Calypso (if I'm not mistaken) did the turbulence in the water

My favorite part of reading the odyssey was when they came across Charybdis and Scylla!

Edit: and now I'm back 3 years later to touch up of Charybdis lore since now she is in Smite!
