Fantastic innovation. In material science it is well known that castings behave very different from pressed or forged parts. Castings are more brittle, which obviously will not help in a crash. You can design a special alloy to improve the cast, which it looks like Tesla has done. And the best way to make it less brittle is to do a bit of shaping on it. Fantastic that Tesla does this on these huge and complex parts. Really amazing to see this.

I couldn't be more excited to see the teardown of the new Austin & Berlin Model Y's with front and rear giga-casting, and of course, if Tesla will bring true real-life long-range with the 4680s!

So yes, I would replace my current LR Model Y with the new variant from Austin with both Giga-Casting if it's a true LR of say 450+ miles (i.e. 450mi - 20-30% for safety reserve, 10-15%, and battery health, regular charge to only 80-90%, = 315-360 mile real-life range).

The gigacastings also mean much more accuracy overall, like an order of magnitude more accurate. Panel gaps will be absolutely accurate. That means most assembly needing human/hand work to fit should be unnecessary. That means way more automation and faster assembling. Now the car will go thru the line faster than grandma can go with her walker.

The 70 count part reduction was claimed for the rear casting alone. A roughly similar reduction for the front casting seems reasonable.

I recall when castings by Tesla were just a rumor. My mind was trying to construct how this would be implemented. Tesla innovates and the world copies them and then the competition bad mouths them.

That raised more questions than it answered. Does the new structural arrangement achieve the same traditional crash protection by a new mechanism, or does it provide a superior protection by the new mechanism; if so what and how?

Mine is on order and scheduled for delivery in June. I'm hoping it's from Texas so that I get the casting design and the 4680 cells. I'm already excited how better the car has gotten over these past few months with various upgrades and additions and I haven't even received the car yet.

No promised revelations in this film.

If I remember correctly the 70 piece number is just for the rear casting. I have not heard how many pieces are replaced up front.
