I got my wedding cake from a grocery store. It was 3 tier with flowers and $75. We cut it up and served it at the end of the wedding and not a piece was left. Everyone said it was delicious. Im sure it was a box cake. No regrets. We went on a fabulous honeymoon instead of spending a ton on the wedding. That was more memorable than the wedding. Yeah I said it.

People who make anything artisan, plates, cakes, bread, from scratch as a small maker who think that they’re target demographic is people who want to buy their cakes at Walmart baffle me. I knew someone who made pottery, she puts hours into each cup. Her neighbor asked why she’d buy one for 60$ (hand made, clay, highly sculptural with carving and added built pieces) when she could buy one at Walmart. She didn’t know what to say, and I told her “there’s nothing you can tell her to change her mind on the cost. People who value whatever it is, handmade, are going to value it and people who don’t see sense in it aren’t going to. It’s wild to me to feel like someone who can’t afford it owes you business.

As someone who went to culinary school, yes, box cake is literally just the dry ingredients mixed together. It's basically just skipping you having to measure out and mix them.
And if you just swap the oil and water with butter and milk, and add an egg, it will taste homemade.

My fiance has a friend who is a cake decorator at our local walmart. She went to school for culinary to be a walmart cake decorator, which even she gets how odd that can seem to some people. She does beautiful work, gets paid rather well and loves her job.

In my state being a home baker/cook is illegal.
State law REQUIRES a health department certified commercial kitchen to sell any food to the public including at farmers markets and flea markets.

I’m a baker! And I do those cakes! And I know times are hard so if someone tells me that my cakes aren’t in their budget I’ll refer them to Walmart! I’ve actually gotten requests for sheet cakes and told people I wouldn’t feel right taking their money by making that for 2 times the price! That’s just me! Live and let live! I used to get my bday cakes from Safeway growing up. The ladies working there really cared and always made sure that my cake looked fun and was affordable for my mom. Just because it’s from a grocery store doesn’t mean someone didn’t take the time to put their heart and soul into the food.

I was not a great cashier at Walmart 35 years ago. I earned an MA, eventually. But what Walmart taught me was more important. Low pay doesn’t mean low skilled or stupid. I have managed to have an enjoyable meaningful life without a lot of money. Really fun yet informative video.
