My dad and I went boating on a lake, and we got to hear one of these while it flew nearby. Rather jarring to hear such a guttural sound come from such a graceful, elegant creature.

I was fishing next to a Heron the other day and we were just doing our own thing. I think I walked a little too close so he let out that deep grumbly almost barking sound and I was like "Wait, was that you?"
This helped confirm that indeed, it was the majestic creature making that awful sound.

Sounds like a dinosaur. Just moved to a new place with a ton more wilderness surrounding it. I saw a heron the other day and now I'm waking up to some strange bird call that sounds like it comes from a piscivorus bird. I pretty sure this matches up.

Sitting in the dark around a campfire on the lake shore and what we all believed to be a pterodactyl, later learned it was a Blue Heron, produced the most hair raising sound ever. Six grown men instantly turned into scared little boys. A sound I will never forget.

This is probably what all those people who think they hear the mothman are hearing

They sound scary with a big variety of calls.I have them wading in the creek with is only 25ft from my elevated covered deck.I sit and watch them catch fish and crayfish all day. They share habitat with much smaller green herons that aren't much bigger than a grackle.I was afraid the GBH would attack the GH over competition. But the creek is very bountiful with prey. The GBH seems to ignore them and live peacefully beside them here.I love watching both and how stealthy they are.Great spear fishers and fascinating birds.

I remember one time I was down by the river with my brother and his friends and I saw a Blue Heron.
I remember getting very close to it, and when it saw me, it made this noise: 0:13. I swear it almost sounds like a man aggressively blowing into a PVC pipe.

I snuck out one night and heard one of these calls, coming from the dark down by the water. It was absolutely terrifying cuz i didn't know they sounded like this. Also, it was probably midnight or 1 AM and i was walking alone. I nearly had a heart attack! I love these birds but gosh are they scary sounding!!

Imagine having a few dozen of these behind your house, all making this sound at the same time, & your neighbor had an easily angered dog in the back yard.

I was backpacking along the muskegon river in the manistee national forest once and heard this going on till about 2 in the morning not knowing what on earth was making the noises.

I have one that perches on my chimney at night. When i go out in the morning to put corn out for the ducks, he takes off with this nose, but much life louder.

Fantastic example of a heron call. Well needed after the day I've had

I was leading a kayaking trip at night and a few of these were on the water flying over and occasionally squawking in the dark, it was terrifying and felt like we were with dinosaurs

Amazing! These birdies feed quite close to my apartment and in knowing that, I was wondering if the sounds I've been hearing were perhaps them, so I tried to find a video to match the call. Definitely does not sound like the same bird (there are many birds who feed in the stream), so I'll keep exploring. Love this anyhow.

I always love hearing them scream as they fly past, especially at night. Like the call of a demon. My favorite.

Today I was on a hike and was suddenly startled by a loud sound similar to 0:04. Looked to my left and saw two herons flying close together along the water, about 15-20 feet away from me.

I've seen herons many times before, but this was the first time I ever heard one calling. Definitely caught me off guard.

I hear them on the Roanoke River every evening in the summer time.
