The Learning Circuit - The Science of Electricity

We use electricity everyday in our homes. Devices plugged into the wall are powered by AC electricity. Handheld devices like our smart phones are powered by DC electricity. Electricity for our devices comes from outlets in our walls and from batteries but how does that work? How does electricity get from one point to another? To explain how electricity works, Karen starts with the most basic parts. Everything, all matter, is made up of atoms. Atoms are made up of particles consisting of protons and neutrons in the core, surrounded by electrons. In an atom, protons are positively charged, while electronics are equally negatively charged. Atoms normally contain the same number of protons and electrons. If this is the case, these atoms are electrically neutral, having no charge. However, this can be changed. An atom can gain or lose an electron by passing it to or from another atom. This causes an atom to become an ion, meaning it has extra or is missing electrons. If an ion has extra electrons it is negatively charged, while an ion with missing electrons is positively charged. Charged ions exert force on each other.

What are you talking about?
Elektrons?
Electricity is just a lot of angry pixies running in circles
I know they're angry because sometimes they'll bite

For some reason I always feel Karen is baked out of her mind when she does these videos. Like just high as hell, lol.

It's pretty great to see someone so happy when they talk about this stuff.

as an adult that hasn't had a chance to learn electrical engineering at all, this is a cool series!

That is the best scientific explanation of electricity i've ever seen! Great video!

You have succinctly achieved what my science teachers at school never did. I now understand what is electricity. Thank you. Other topics could include how TVs work with changing tech, the internet (non black box The IT crowd explanation), radio and telephones.

Actually magnets i.e. The magnetic field can move electrons. It you pass a Magnet through a coil of wire you can create a voltage.

You guys are awesome. I never get to comment early so I just wanted to take this opportunity to you know.

fabulous upload element14 presents. I killed the thumbs up on your video. Continue to keep up the quality work.

There's a typo in the description where 'electronics' is used instead of 'electrons'. Additionally, magnets can and are used to induce electrical current in conductors, whereby a conductor, such as a coil of wire, subjected to a changing magnetic field (either by physical movement or varying electromagnetism) will be subject to an induced electric current, such as in a generator. However, a stationary magnet is incapable of inducing electric current in a stationary conductor.

05:46 wrong. Magnetic field can create electricity by applying in a coil.

I have an argue with my dad: he thinks voltage is the amount of electrons flowing in a circuit, and amperage the force of the electric current.

If electrons flow from -ve terminal to +ve, then why we say that the current flows from +ve to -ve

you spent so much time explaining and showing that opposite charges attract and same ones repel, but you completely and absolutely missed to explain WHY would an electron leave it's parent atom and go to another one.

Great videos! I wonder if there's too much light for her while filming, she's always squinting a lot.
