Sure, Japanese mascots aren't anime, but some of them act like they come straight out of anime. So much so that they're starting to receive anime adaptations, like Chiitan, Rilakkuma, and all of the Sanrio characters. But, why are there so many mascots to begin with?

Robo for robot (duh) and Hana for flower. The flower is likely a sakura but Robosaku or Robora doesnt quite have the same charm.

A few years ago the municipality of Xochimilco near Mexico City made a very cute pink axolotl mascot called Lupita and were campaigning to have her as a foreign entry to the mascot Grand Prix in Japan. It was really cute, they used to sell Lupita merch and the proceeds were given to research and conservation of axolotls as they are an endemic species of Xochimilco lake.
