Stunning. And look at all that wasted road space - caused by the common misunderstanding of how merge in turn works

Using your vehicle as a weapon or using it to threaten/intimidate other road users should be grounds for an instant driving ban.

The cammer did well for staying completely clear of it.

I got forced of the road by a hgv this week because the driver was so against me merging in the slip road in the traffic. Luckilly, a 1 in a million, a copper was in the lane 3 or 4 cars back. We both got pulled over and he will be in court soon to explain his actions.

This is very timely. Had a 20 minute long debate with my dad when he complained about people driving down the empty lane and then moving across at the closure. Well, the lane is only empty for them to do that because people aren't using all available road space and merging in turn at the closure as they should do..

There needs to be a big campaign to help people understand merge-in-turn, or at the very least, instructional signs need to be put up telling drivers to use all space. Authorities have been absolutely shocking at informing the public of Highway Code misunderstandings, much like pedestrian priority at junctions. This is causing far too much confrontation and is leading to genuinely dangerous incidents.

Feel very sorry for the children in that Renault. How many times has the driver (their parent?) put them in harms way because of their own out of control ego?

With all the problems we see with this kind of merge in turn situation, as has been said so many times, there really needs to be a massive publicity campaign with this. Plus those repeat signs at every such situation that read "When queuing use both lanes" followed by "Merge in turn" near the pinch point. Currently its only at a few such locations but should be standard signage.

Unfortunately I don't think anything will be done about this issue and we'll still be discussing it and watching videos on this problem in 20 years time, just as we are now. And yet it's easily addressed.

The police in my area love dashcam footage of any driver actively blocking live lanes. 3 points £100 fine.

As the road signs suggest, the lane closes in 400 yards. Use all available road space and get in the lane that offers the least resistance.

Thank you, Ashley. You have made "Make it a non-event" into my personal mantra when driving.

My wife suffered a burst appendix a few years ago and it wasn't certain she'd survive.
I was working on the other side of the country and, while I didn't drive recklessly to get home, I certainly didn't dawdle.

On another occasion there was a possibility that an industrial project I was overseeing might have exploded.
I was staying in a hotel 40 miles from the site and, once again, I wasn't hanging around on my way there.
On that occasion, I actually flagged down a cop-car and they escorted me to the oil refinery where I was working.

I absolutely accept that the vast majority of people who drive aggressively are simply being tools AND that there's never an excuse for driving recklessly but people who do stuff like straddling two lanes to prevent other cars passing should consider the possibility that the vehicle behind them IS making an urgent journey.

If it turned out that the driver of that Land Rover was, for example, trying to get to a hospital after finding out that their child had been stabbed, would you want to hinder them or would you try to help them by letting them pass?
Most people are courteous and helpful in person but stick us in cars and we tend to act like nobs.

Well that’s probably the one and only time that Defender will ever be offroad!😂

All of this could be avoided if the cones merged both lanes into the centre at the merge point then directed the traffic into the appropriate lane. This would remove the perception of priority and should lead to better use of the lanes and merging in turn.

Got to hand it to the folks in the cam car. They very sensibly kept their distance, drove sensibly and even their comments were intelligent and well spoken.

It never ceases to amaze me on how many drivers don't understand merge in turn, some people think it's queue-jumping, and those people you can guarantee haven't read the highway code since they've passed their test's.

I dont think I've ever seen road rage this bad. If I was a oassenger in either of those cars, I would have been terrified. I feel sorry for the passengers in those cars, especially the children in the Black Renault who are being put mindlessly in danger for no reason

We've had lane closures on one the the main routes into Southampton recently. This kind of thing was commonplace on the first few days of the works. They did put out a load of signs saying 'USE BOTH LANES' and 'MERGE IN TURN' and it has calmed down a lot but there is still the single queue when there's still 800 yards of road left. The disappointing thing was so-called professional drivers in HGVs policing the road by driving straight down the middle.

Rule 1 - use a speed only marginally higher than the queing traffic. Crawl if necessary. Rule 2 - as you gently roll up to the merge-in-turn point stop and wait for a fellow motorist to allow you to merge. Works for me. And encourages traffic behind me to stay in the 'empty' lane for longer, I find. Everyone's a winner.

That's mental and happens a lot here in the UK with a lot of people that just do not understand basic highway code and definitely don't understand merge in turn at all.

probably the only off road action that defender sees 😄
