California's Prop 47 is flipping the script on what ‘public safety’ means by prioritizing people over punishment — watch John Legend break down how it’s already helping communities in California
With @johnlegend & @reformalliance

For decades, California’s prisons have been in crisis, severely overcrowded, and costing the state $11 billion annually. In response, California voters passed Proposition 47, a groundbreaking new policy to send less people to prison for low-level crimes and invest the money saved back into communities.

So, is Prop 47 working?

The answer is yes. Since it passed, Prop 47 has reduced incarceration in the nation's most populous state by more than 20,000 people annually—without making crime go up. It’s also reallocated more than $600 million from the state prisons budget into community safety solutions like preventing violence, providing mental health support, and treating addiction.

In short, California invested in public safety by reimagining what public safety actually means.

Now, imagine if more states did this.

It’s reduced crime only because what they consider crime isn’t considered crime anymore

Prop 47 did exactly the opposite of what he’s says it does

As someone who lived in CA this is frustrating. These celebrities do not live where there is a lot of crime. Lots of crime in California is not prosecuted because people want to be empathetic towards criminals. That is all well and good until you start hurting law abiding citizens.

It’s funny how we have celebrities like John Legend telling us about public safety when he & his celebrity friends all have armed private security detail. If I had armed private security I wouldn’t need to be concerned w public safety either 🤦‍♂️

Are we not gonna talk about California’s massive crime spike. This seems completely tone deaf and ignorant of the reality that’s happening in California.

lowering crime doesn't really count if you are just ignoring the crime. Its still happening and people are still being victimized but they get no justice.

Do you know what is the difference between theory and practice?

One example: In theory, stealing in California is still illegal, in practice, California legalized theft.

What ever happened to accountability? Actions have consequences? Cause and effect?

Prop 47 is an embarrassment to law enforcement, the communities are left being the victims of convicts who seemingly don't get any punishment for their crimes...

You can see that this is the exact opposite of the old Broken Windows Theory.

Proposition 47 is an unmitigated disaster for California. Every person released from prison or county jail on drug charges because Prop 47 passed was actually a two or three striker. They went back onto the streets throughout the state. Would like to see the return on investment that the “savings” was spent on. Just more dangerous people and homelessness followed Prop 47.

Another reason to dislike John Legend. This has made crime easier in CA.

Next they will have you apologizing to criminals because you are not doing enough to be their next victim.

Go to Oakland or Downtown LA without security and come back with your reaction after your visit to the hospital.

Absolutely, give all criminals all money instead of jail. Win win
