The apple trees produce a natural wax that coats and protects the apples, but in the washing of the apples after they are picked, the natural wax coating is removed. So the apple producers lightly coat the picked and washed apples with a thin, harmless and edible wax to continue the natural protection of the apples until purchased.
No big deal...🍎

This is actually something is needed to keep apples natural for long term, before you use it, it is a good idea to wash it off. It's not toxic, and apples do naturally create it, but we do add extra layers to keep them good for longer periods. It's not bad, and is actually a good thing.

The "terrifying" detail he's talking about is the edible wax

this is why I deeply appreciate channels like Kurzgesagt and Oversimplified cause they thoroughly research their material before posting something

I'm an agricultural engineer and apples produces their own wax, but in the food processing industry we apply a natural inocuous 100% safe and edible wax to prevent fungus damage to the apples and avoid moisture loss, this additional wax helps to preserve the apple for longer period of time specially when you are exporting them.

Apples have a natural wax coating called the "bloom" that protects them from drying out and bruising. Some apple growers spray their apples with a synthetic wax to make them look more appealing and to extend their shelf life. This synthetic wax is food-grade and safe to eat, and it does not get absorbed by the body. However, some studies have shown that the synthetic wax could seal in pesticide residues. However, washing the apples before you eat them will remove any pesticide residues, so there is no need to worry.

It's not chemicals, it's just a thin layer of wax that keeps it fresh on store counters for longer. It's completely safe to eat

It's mainly paraffin wax, which is basically the same wax that candles are made of (but not 100% so don't think u can eat candles) and it can not easily react chemically with other substances, which is why it's also not toxic to digest. (Unless in big amounts, where it has health problems for other reasons then toxicity)

Edit: and yes, the apples create it naturally (although some company's do actually apply extra wax since the natural wax may have been washed off when washing the apples to remove dirt and stuff.)
Apples need their wax to keep moisture inside since the skin is very thin, and it also helps keeping mold away. I guess that the reason they naturally create wax is to delay the rotting process, which reveals the pits/seeds to the ground at a later time in the season and also gives the seeds more time to absorb resources from the apple's flesh that are needed to make the energy to sprout into new tree saplings.

Carnauba wax is used to coat and seal fruits, prolonging their shelf life. The wax comes from Brazil, scraped from the carnauba palm leaves. It is harmless, and doesn't need to be removed before eating.

Im pretty sure the apples do it themselves, i.e natural wax
