Wrap the cord around your working or "holding" hand once or twice and then, if you drop it, it falls, it falls for a foot and stops.

If it falls in fresh water, you can always save the tool. Flood it with WD-40 and keep it spinning by hand once an hr as it dries. In a day or two, it'll be fine.
Saltwater- rinse asap in fresh water for 10 minutes and then repeat the steps above.
I also see you use the D-rung. Place your hand on the forward head, arch your hand and force it to lock between the buffer and your hand like a climbing anchor in a crack. We just don't use them anymore but used to break the tabs off the handle, tighten the bolts down tight enough to keep it rigid but if needed, we could rotate it out of the way when needed or place it up to force a fist in there to hold it one-handed.
