A common question in antkeeping is something along the lines of "what ant should I keep." Well, I believe I have the answer. Listen as I talk about some of my favorite ants, Novomessor cockerelli and Novomessor albisetosus, and why you should keep them.

Agree with you 100%! When I was selling ants, people would come in for one species and always leave with a Novo colony.

200 species! Wow, this guy is so lucky. Also, Novomessor are so awesome. They really do have everything you want in a colony.

Wow, that’s a cool species sadly I can’t get it because I’m in Australia, speaking of Aus, you should come to Sydney again as nuptials are just starting

I suggest Messor barbarus (from Spain where I’m from) as the best ant to keep, the the og Messor: seed harvesters, polymorphic, generalists, basically everything Novomessor is but a bit different and polymorphic

Is there any cool species of ants in the Dallas Oregon? Just wondering

I'm in New Jersey so it would be really difficult to get them. Are there any other species you can think of that can be limited by food availability?

Would you recommend one Novomessor sp. over the other? I’ve been told N. albisetosus Is more vibrant and only slightly smaller than N.cockerelli? Both are available for purchase in the UK and can’t decide between the two.

I have a love-hate relationship with this species. they can be so numerous and vigorous that they can actually ruin good anting spots. by simply extirpating the other ants.

fortunately dorymyrmex bicolor is here to keep them from reigning absolute and will give them the same treatment.

Solinopsis xyloni I have got from Stateside ants grew her colony up to 50-60 workers they then tore her legs off and left her to die in the outworld ? They must not be subjects of the Queen. Democracy in the colony. REVOLUTION!!!!

A point neglected: Novomessor cockerelli are extremely boring past 500 workers
